happy birthday, jevie! - pt.1

tonight was spent with Dawn and Dan at Moxies :) we had an amazingly delicious dinner, and we may or may not have enjoyed a few White Peach bellini's. yum!

tomorrow is jevie's actual birthday! we're going for lunch with his sister and her boyfriend, and then i have a nice little dinner date planned :)

 i love birthdays!

date day ♥

what a day yesterday! Thursday - my dads birthday *bonne fete, mon pere!! i love you and miss you more than you can ever imagine!* and also my hooky day from work. i went in and did my friend Ashley's nails then scooted home, woke Jev up, switched cars and then we were on our way downtown. the sun was shining and it was a beautiful September day here - so - what do you do when the weather is warm? go get ice cream! we went to Beacon Hill and had some lunch and then some yummy ice cream :) *i had cotton candy flavor!*

our day in photos

we spent the day together. thats all that ever matters to me. we can have fun doing anything together. so, we did just that. we indulged in some good ol' greasy food, had some yummy ice cream and then took a drive along beautiful Dallas road *Dallas road runs right along the ocean.. its so beautiful.* then parked and ate our ice cream cones where the cruise ship was docked. oh, and jevad ever-so-kindly picked me those flowers from the restaurants garden. thanks, bub. haha.

jevad did manage to drag me into a hobby store that he loves. this photo captures so much emotion. lol
me: not so happy to be in a 'boy' store
jev: soooo thankful to not be looking at makeup, nail products or girl shoes lol
*i told him to smile reaaaallllyyyy big! hehehe*

on to the beauty-bit..
yes, those are my natural lashes. all mine baby, alllll mine! hehehe
finally. finally. finally! i used black for my smoky eye. i've been petrified to use pure black for a smoky eye but i decided to pull out my big girl brush and load it up with Blackout from my fav Urban Decay palette. my biggest tip when using black eyeshadow? slow & steady. i began by packing the shadow on an angle from the outer 3rd of my eye, gradually moving upwards to my brow. after packing the shadow on gradually, i then began to smoke it out. i followed the diagonal line and lightly 'pulled' the shade towards my crease. i was so proud of how this turned out lol ... is that lame? haha

♥ lenseflare! the natural sunlight made those gorgeous rays of light.. love, love, love it!

tomorrow night: dinner with dawn and dan for jevad's birthday! his birthday is on sunday, but we're celebrating tomorrow night with dawn and dan :) can't wait! yummy food, great company and the cutest birthday boy in the entire world!

so. want to know why i didnt post all of this yesterday? because i erased my whole layout. all of it. gone. G-O-N-E. i was so frustrated, frantically trying to fix everything before pulling my hair out last night, but i was clearly unsuccessful as some of you may have seen. so i managed to tackle it tonight and quickly write this post. that'll teach me for trying to 'fix' things on my blog that aren't even broken. sheesh.

peacock & polish

well, well, well! i finally decided what im going to be for Halloween! can you guess? yep! a peacock! i decided to make my own costume, and i started with my tutu!

i was inspired by the beautiful colours of the peacock feathers. the vibrant blues, greens, teals, purples, and hints of gold. there's something so elegant but fun about peacock feathers. i cannot wait to do my makeup, my hair.. ahhh!! im so excited!

top left: my tutu (before i added feathers!) that i made all by myself
top right: a close up of my beautiful feather
bottom left: a feather (and 4 more) that i glued to bobby pins for my hair
bottom right: my tutu after i added the feathers! i just have to add a few rhinestones and voila! my tutu is complete!

a close up of my tutu! im so excited to wear this! i can't wait until i see my whole costume all together. im really proud of how this turned out - ive even had a few people ask if i can make one for them :)

finally, my new nails this week :) simple, but fun with the gold feature nail. this week im wearing gel polish in 'Thanks a Windmillion' by OPI. my gold feature nail is 'Florentine Gold' loose glitter by Martha Stuart mixed with clear INM gel :)

a reason, a season or a lifetime.

wow. i haven't written in a few days - i miss blogging. to make a long story short (and not get too personal) there has been a lot of stuff happening in my life right now. some things have been great, some, not so much.. but i've been really pre-occupied and honestly ive had no inspiration for different posts :( sorry..

in the past few weeks, ive come to realize that people come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime. wether they are only meant to be part of your life for a short period of time, or for the rest of your life.. they're there for a reason. for a purpose. ive been blessed with great friends in my life, but there are a few that are more than that. they're family. they love me at my best, and even at my worst. they support my dreams, and are always ready to catch me when i fall. they know my deepest, darkest secrets and never judge. they're always there. Jevads friend said it best the other day:

"family has nothing to do with blood. it's about who cares about you and who you care about."

so true. ive been so lucky to be able to have the same best friend for the past 20 years. ive come to call her parents Mom and Dad #2, her nieces call me Aunty and there's always room for Jevad and i at the dinner table - any night of the week. thank you, for everything. my other best friend is pretty wonderful, too. she's also been right by my side through some trying times. she's always willing to listen, to lend a shoulder to cry on. and of course there's the love of my life. we were faced with some extremely hard obstacles at the beginning of our relationship, but he stuck around. through it all. thick and thin. he has been my rock, my safe place. im looking forward to spending the rest of my life with such an amazing man. im forever grateful for being so blessed. i dont know what ive done to have such influential and supportive people surrounding me. i love you. you are part of my family.

sometimes family doesn't see eye to eye. blood isn't always thicker than water. jevads friend is right, sometimes it has nothing to do with blood. its about the people in your life that consistently care about you, and you care about them. im lucky enough to have a family consisting of both 'family-family' and 'friend-family' but really, why differentiate the two. family is family.

i know this post was a bit 'heavy'. not the normal beauty-blabber.. sorry. this is my outlet, this is where i can write whatever is stewing in my head. i promise, ill be back to the up-beat stuff tomorrow.

Summer Loves

hello, lovelies! as promised, here is my Summer Favourites post. these are all of the things that i either used or wore day after day this summer. what were your staples this summer? anything that you couldn't live without?

this summer was all about stackable bracelets and rose studs for me. i love the versatility of stacking my own bracelets. i even got into making some of my own *click here for my DIY!* see the wrap bracelet in the bottom picture, upper left corner? i wear that almost every day. and as for the rose studs.. they seem to add such a girly, elegant, romantic element to any outfit i wear them with. i just love them!

i did a post of my makeup must-haves a few posts back, and my summer loves are pretty much the same. i really loved a soft, natural looking smoky eye this summer, so i reached for my NAKED 2 palette everyday. my new found love of BB creams is one that i don't think will fade for a very, very long time and it was p-e-r-f-e-c-t for summer: not too heavy, and just enough coverage for my liking. plus it completely hydrated my skin.
my friend Dawn introduced me to Eminence skin care. all natural, and so concentrated. a little reaaaaalllyyyy goes a long way. im in love with their Sugar Plum Oil-Free Revitalizer and their Bearberry eye cream. the beauty of these creams is that even though they're super concentrated, they don't leave your skin feeling greasy and they blend so nicely.

the perfumes i usually go for are sweet and slightly floral - but usually more sweet. hand me anything vanilla, or something like 'Pink Sugar' and im all over it. which is why ive always loved Britney Spears perfume - especially the pink bottle *i cant remember the name*. this summer though, i've mostly worn my CK 'IN 2 U'. its sweet, slightly floral with a bit of citrus. its the epitome of a summer scent. i've also loved Victoria Secret's 'Sexy Little Things: NOIR' and Bath & Bodyworks 'Warm Vanilla Sugar'. my all time favorite perfume, ever?! Hugo Boss 'Deep Red'. delicious.

i lived in maxi dresses this summer.. actually, dresses in general. my two favorites are the ones in the pictures. the maxi is from Ricki's and the raspberry coloured one is from Old Navy. i love the fact that i could dress these up or down for work, or for a dinner out. i loved pairing any dress i wore with my denim jacket and those super cute gladiator sandals *both from Old Navy.. those sandals were only $5 and my boyfriend picked them out for me! score!!*

there it is, my Summer Loves! i'd love to see what your must-haves were this summer :)

looking forward to fall;

tonight was a double date night! we went to dinner and a movie with Jevad's best friend and his girlfriend- so fun! i'm off tomorrow - yay! who knows what we'll get up to tomorrow. maybe ill start making my tutu for my halloween costume...

looking forward to a saturday-sleep-in;

Liebster Award

hello, beauties! i have been nominated today for a Liebster Award. dont know what a Liebster Award is? The Liebster Award is awarded to new, up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers who deserve recognition and support to keep blogging. The word Liebster is a German word that means dearest, sweetest, nicest, kindest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing and welcome (thanks, Laura for putting that in your post.. cause i had no idea what it meant!)

Laura from A Day in the Life of a Scottish Lass nominated me for the Liebster Award. I'm so excited that someone thinks my blog is worthy of this award, and that others take the time to read what i have to write (or ramble) about on a daily basis. thanks so much for supporting my blog!

Betsey Johnson inspired DIY

i've been in this phase lately where i feel like crafting all. the. time. i saw this style of bracelet while mindlessly exploring the internet and wanted to recreate some for myself :) i always want to buy stretchy bracelets from the stores that i shop at but i feel like they make them so darn small! i like my bracelets a little on the loose side.. so! thats how i made my own Betsey Johnson inspired half pearl/half chain bracelet :)

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

what you'll need:
  • beads or pearls of your choice *i got mine at Michaels Crafts for $1 per strand*
  • a spool of .5mm clear stretch cord
  • metal chain of your choice *i forgot to show it in the picture, but i also used some darker silver chain from an old necklace as well :)*
  • connectors *mine are the 3 pack of roses* - these are optional
  • wire cutters
  • tape
  • patience *hahaha, i had to re-do this bracelet twice because i broke it while trying to tie the finishing knot :( *

got all of your supplies? lets get started!

step one:
start off by wrapping the cord around the widest part of your hand twice. this will allow for extra cord on either ends when it comes time to tie your finishing knots :)
i didn't measure my wrist or lengths exactly, but i made sure i gave myself some extra length to work with. the clear stretch cord wasn't expensive to purchase so i was okay with using a bit more than needed.

step two:
take the cord that you have measured and tape it to your work surface - this will help keep your beads from falling off while you're beading. since i like my bracelets more on the loose side, i applied 4 beads of each size (8 all together) and then added my rose connector (see next step)

step three:
thread on your fancy-dancy connector *if you choose to!*

 step four:
after you've threaded on your connector, add 8 more beads on the other side to
finish the pearl side of your bracelet.
remember - i like my bracelets a bit more loose, you'll have to add or remove beads to make your bracelet fit right for you :)

step five:
chain time! i measured the first piece of chain to be roughly half the width of my wrist. i then laid the rest of my chain underneath the first piece that i cut and made each chain a little longer than the last.

step six:
make sure to tie off the cord on either side of your beads before you add your chains.
thread your three lengths of chain onto one side of your bracelet, then loop the end of the cord through the three chains again and tie a knot. your one side of chains should be nice and secure, now :)

step seven:
slide the other side of your chains onto the other side of your bracelet.

step eight:
tie the other side of the chains in place. it helps if you try to hold the cord as taut as possible *without breaking the cord, like i did!* while tying your finishing knot. trim off any excess cord.

here it is! your super cute Betsey Johnson inspired chain bracelet. i also made a mixed pearl and bead bracelet to wear either with my chain bracelet or on its own :) i can't wait to make more! the next one i make i'm going to add some charms to the chains.

if anyone else makes these, i'd love to see pictures! happy crafting!

all about nails

hello, beauties. another fun day at work today with the girls.. although i had not one, but two NEW clients no-show. grrrr. anyways - i did a beautifully sparkly fill today using GlamGirl Glitters & Feathers :)
my client wanted purple & gold with feathers. so, i did a gold-to-purple fade and feathers on every other finger :) these just look so elegant to me.
i did my nails yesterday with gel polish: all grey with sparkly ring fingers & thumbs then stamped heart polkadots on the remaining 3 fingers -but- i didnt like the stamps so i switched them up a bit today:
OPI GelColor in Alpine Snow, I Have a Herring Problem and INM Gelavish in Devious. the ring fingers and thumbs have one coat of I Have a Herring Problem then i brushed two thin coats of a custom mixed silver sparkle gel over top, applied two thin coats of OPI GelColor Top Coat and cured for 1 minute in our LED Lamp *it only calls for a 30 second cure, but i always like to do a double cure on the last cure :)*
so, with the launch of our GlamGirl line, we focused solely on Glitters, Inlays, Stamping, and Decals. our glitters are so incredibly sparkly and reflective that we thought.. why not make our loose glitters into beautifully shiny nail polishes?! SO! hopefully by Christmas time, GlamGirl Nail Accessories will have a line of GlamGirl Glitter Polish :) we did a test run the other day and were really happy with how it turned out :)

did i mention? tomorrow's friiiiidddaaaayyy!!

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream ♥

BB creams are all rave right now, so i thought i'd give one a whirl. i am a subscriber to a YouTube'r named Sophia (fashionista804) and she did an awesomely thorough review on a few BB creams: one being Maybeline's. im usually a little leery to steer too far away from what i usually use because my skin tends to be quite sensetive (i usually use MAC) but i was really pleased with what Sophia had to say. i took a trip to Walmart last night and picked up a tube of it to try today.. and i love it!

for those who dont know what a BB Cream (Beauty Bomb, Blemish Balm, Blemish Base.. ) is, it's an 8-in-1 skin perfecter that originated in Korea (?). i love this BB cream because it's everything you need, in one product:

  1. Blurs imperfections
  2. Brightens
  3. Evens skin-tone
  4. Smoothes
  5. Hydrates
  6. Enhances
  7. Protects with SPF 30
  8. Oil-Free
SPF 30?! yes please! evens skin-tone? dont mind if i do! it almost reminds me of a slightly more tinted moisturizer. which i guess it basically is, because it moisturizes (duh!) but it's also oil free!

once i applied the cream, i applied my concealer and powder as i normally would. i loved the overall look i got from this product. my skin tone was a bit more even *not drastically, but i could notice a difference* and it honestly felt like i had nothing on my face.. and my skin looked nice and smooth. i loved the way it blended so easily into my skin, and it lasted all day long. even with my taking my mask on and off at work. i hate the feeling of foundation sometimes, because some of the ones i've used in the past tend to feel so heavy on my face.. almost like they're suffocating my skin, even though i only use minimal amounts. i didn't feel like that once, today.

i found the coverage was just what i needed for daytime or while being at work, and once i applied a tiny bit of bronzer, blush and highlighter, my face had a beautiful fresh glow. i'd recommend this product to anyone. and at a price point of just under $9.00 CDN, this is a great 'drugstore brand'.

hope this helped!;

a little of this, a little of that

hello, beauties. today's post is a random mash of randomness. i slacked on the Photo-a-day challenge today because it was something that i didnt know how to make interesting: day 4: whats in your mailbox. what the heck. how can i make a picture of that interesting!? aaaaaaaannnnnyyyyways.. i signed on to facebook tonight and saw that someone had posted pictures of some pieces of jewelry she had bought online. i went to the site and i've fallen in love! if you love accessories from Forever 21, H&M and Aldo, you'll love this site. most pieces are between $1 - $6(ish) and they offer free shipping for orders over $15 :) they're some really cute pieces that would pair perfectly with some of my winter sweaters.. hmmm, this could be a dangerous find. curious? take a peek for yourself!:

the past few days have been... interesting. luckily, we got to see my bestfriend and our niece tonight. me, jevie, bestie and niecey had a little Walmart therapy (i can't wait until we get Target!!!!) and jevie and i got to end our night with baby cuddles, and even got to tuck that beautiful little girl into bed. shes only 9 weeks old.. its been so amazing to watch how much she changes from week to week :)

necklaces and bracelets and rings, oh my!
(and a few baby cuddles, too!);

heaven on earth

here it is, my beauties. day 3 of the Photo-a-day challenge. i took this photo in early August. it was just after a very intense (but short) thunder storm. we were driving to dinner in Metchosin *kind of like the country side of where i live, about 15 mins outside of the city* and we came around this bend, we looked up and all you could see was the beautiful rays of sun just beaming through these huge, overpowering clouds. it was a beautiful moment.. it really did look like the heavens were shining down upon us. so beautiful... the calm after the storm.

Day 3: Far Away

can you believe i took this on my iPhone? im so proud :) hope everyone had an amazing long weekend. for those who are going back to school tomorrow, have a great first day! for those of us who are back to work tomorrow, have a great week :)

i got the idea for this from Niki @ . she posted this on her blog's facebook page and i knew i wanted to do it right away. how fun!

 snapping pictures left, right and center;

our business turns 2!

oh my gosh!! 2 years ago today we opened our tiny little nail studio. today, we're in a bigger location and have 2 of our friends working with us. we now have a distribution out of our studio, too! i can't believe it has been two years already.

the past two years have been such an amazing learning experience. i feel like i've grown so much and really come into my own. i've pushed my boundaries and tested my limits (are those the same thing?) and i've learnt that i can handle a lot more than i could have ever imagined. i feel so overwhelmed with the love, support and loyalty that our clients have shown us, as well as our families. it's been such a privilege to be able to first of all, own a business (with my best friend!!), and second of all, watch something that you started from absolutely nothing grow and blossom into something so wonderful. Shabby Chic is still young, but there is so much potential and i'm really looking forward to seeing what our 3rd year has in store for us.

for anyone who reads this, i want to thank you. thank you to the ones who have stuck around when it hasn't been easy. thank you to the clients that have followed us from spa to salon and then to our studio(s). its because of an amazing clientele base and the love & support of my jevie, dad, mom, step-mom and the rest of my family and friends that i was able to have my dreams come true.
Jevie: thank you for renovating not one, but two shops for us. thank you for making me laugh at the end of a hard day and listening to me ramble when i've needed to vent. thank you for believing in my dreams when others might not have. i am so lucky to have you in my life. i love you always xoxo
♥ dad & france: even though we're miles apart, i can always feel your love. thank you for all of your wise words and great advice. thank you for believing in me.
mom: my first real client! thank you for suffering through sub-par nails and hours of sitting in one spot while i fussed *and sometimes cried* you've always believed in me :) thanks, mama!
Dawn: thank you for agreeing to take this wild ride with me. i know it hasn't always been a walk in the park, but it has always been worth it. there's no one else i'd rather be doing this with. here's to year #3!

Happy Birthday, Shabby Chic

looking forward to year 3;
